Roll storage: It's not pretty

It is often stated that web offset has the highest waste in the industry. From my travels, I must agree with the statement. Waste in web begins with how we receive rolls and how we treat the raw material. Our material handling in this industry is terrible to say the least. In many plants, I see the following in the roll storage area: Congested. Poor material handler training. Damaged rolls, torn wrappers, wrappers missing. Extensive butt rolls. Dropped rolls.
